Jackson Hole Fly Fishing Report

May 13, 2012

Snake River

The warm weather has made the Snake silty with water from the snow melt. That will occur throughout the month of May and June. This year, because of the early runoff and lower snowpack, we expect the runoff to end sometime early in July. Until then, there is always the 4 mile clear stretch of water just below Jackson Lake Dam.

Snake River Tributaries

Most of the Snake River tributaries are open, however, the runoff has begun. Pacific Creek, Buffalo River, the Gros Ventre and the Hoback are all in runoff mode.

South Fork

The South Fork is doing fair right now. Beware of water changes, they are increasing the water at this point.

Henry's Fork

Things are starting to heat up over at the Henry's Fork. The annual Salmonfly Hatch is beginning and will continue to work it's way upstream for the next few weeks. This is a great hatch to fish, but don't chase the head of the hatch, it is very difficult to predict exactly how it will move upstream. There have been some bugs spotted in the Warm River area and with the warm weather that is predicted the the near future it will likely intensify.

Salt River

The Salt River is coming into its annual runoff and will be silty for a while.

Teton Park lakes

This is the time of the year for the lakes. The streams are in runoff, but the lakes have just iced off and are fishing fine. .

Green River

The Green River is fairly clear above Horse Creek and offers decent wade fishing at this time. With a 40% of average snowpack, we don't expect much of a runoff on this river. It may be fishable throughout the season. I was just fishing around the Warren Bridge area and the visibility is good there.

Yellowstone Park

Fishing in Yellowstone is closed until next Memorial Day weekend. At that time much of the fishing will be open, such as the Firehole, and some will be closed until a little later in the season. It should be a good year for the Firehole..
